Our birds are NEVER given antibiotics and are naturally raised.

What is FREE RANGE?

  Free Range means that our birds have access to the outdoors during the daylight hours in which to sunbath and scratch around in the dirt and grass.  This means they have a fantastic life here at Heritage Hollow!

It means that our poultry never see the inside of a cage!

The access to the outdoors and fresh air creates optimal health for our poultry, which in turn, means optimal health for your family.  You will KNOW where your food is coming from and how it’s been treated.  Our poultry is rich and full of flavour due to their healthy natural diet.  Along with grains our birds are able to forage on many little goodies our property has to offer, including grasses and herbs. They are often given excess garden scraps such as tomatoes and cucumbers as well!

We humanely raise poultry used for meat production.  To ensure that such poultry are treated with the utmost respect the birds shall receive plenty of sunshine, fresh air, clean water, personal space, ample grain and pasture.  Slaughter shall only be done in an Ontario licensed Abattoir that is to the satisfaction of Heritage Hollow.

Every year Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is becoming more and more popular.  The local food movement is HUGE and the demand for locally grown, raised and produced food is increasing as we become more and more aware of the problems and costs of our current global food system.

 Supporting the growth and stability of your local small farmers, is an important step towards guaranteeing a healthy food system and ensuring optimum nutrition for you and the ones you love.

That is why we are now offering our FARM FRESH produce, meat, eggs, preserves and baked goods .  We NEVER use antibiotics, growth hormones or pesticides on our farm.

Here’s how it works:

Every week we will be offering an assortment of food items,  depending on what is available at that time. Every Monday evening  you will be able to pick up a delicious box of Farm Fresh goodies. (See examples below)

We offer 5 different packages and our CSA runs for 18 weeks from July 1st to October 28th.

We are located in beautiful Erin, Ontario, just a short drive away from many city centres such as Orangeville, Guelph, Georgetown and Milton.  On a typical weekend we plan to have a ‘pick your own pumpkin patch‘,  a ‘mini mini corn maze’ for the mini ones (kids) and  hayrides through out the day!!

(Hours – Every Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 6pm)

You can also take a stroll through our “haunted forest”.  This year’s theme will be “creatures”.  This is a daytime haunt and is appropriate for the whole family.

We are in the planning stages of having a “Meet the Farmers” Day here at Heritage Hollow!!

A Farmer’s Market right here on our property that will include many local farmer vendors and artisons.  Please come back here in the future to learn when!

Green Eggs?! What?!

We often have customers SHOCKED when they occasionally see a green egg or two in their carton of free range eggs.  Most people don’t realize that there are many different types of chickens that lay many different coloured eggs, including green and blue!  Now,  some of our regular customers always ask for  ”those beautiful green eggs”.  The are identical in every way except for their colour.  (Just like the whites and browns, an egg is an egg)

Our coloured eggs come from our  Ameraucana chickens.

When we first got our chickens we decided that we didn’t want just any chickens.  We wanted them all to be different and unusual so we were able to get an assortment of rare and heritage breeds including the Green/Blue egg layer. Another reason we opted for the different breeds was because of the variety of egg colours (light brown, dark brown, brown with speckles, beige and even one that looks almost pink)

We totally believe in free range.  These birds are spoiled and I a mean S-P-O-I-L-E-D!  Every morning after breakfast they crowd around our front door waiting for left overs.  Let me see…yesterday morning they dined on oatmeal, toast, pineapple and pancakes.  Because they are divine divas, with the run of the whole 12 acres, they can do what chickens do.  No cages, no overcrowding, no stress….just a life of leisure taking dust baths, eating, scratching and pooping.

After I saw a documentry on the conditions of commercially raised layers I was so disturbed I had to get our own chickens. That was 5 years ago and I will never go back.  I LOVE them and their eggs!

Our eggs are WAY superior than the ones produced from a commercially raised bird.  The commercial eggs are pretty gross actually (once you’ve had fresh you’ll never go back)  The free range FRESH eggs have firm whites and the yolks are almost orange AND they actually have a taste….rich, creamy and oh so delicious-o! So it is always best to either look for our Egg Cooler at our farm gate or  join our Farm Fresh Food Club   to make sure you are able to experience them for yourselves, because when we have eggs available,  the cartons fly out of here like crazy.
